Robert Bell. Lair 271
Existing info for Robert Born c.1868 in Glasgow to Robert Bell and Elizabeth Bell. He had 2 brothers and 6 sisters. Robert died within Hartwood on 05/04/1918 and was buried on 08/4/1918.
Further information that I’ve uncovered. Looking at census I could only find 6 sisters and 1 brother (other brother may have died between census). Jessie. 1864Annie. 1866Jane. 1870Elizabeth. 1871Margaret. 1874James 1876Agnes. 1883
In the 1881 census there was another James Bell residing at the address. He was born 1860 - he may have been the uncle of our Robert Bell, but brought up as his brother.
Robert’s father Robert was a blacksmith, born c.1843. His mother c.1843. (Nee Bell). They were married 1863 in Bridgeton, Glasgow. In 1871 the family lived at 366 London Road, Carlton, Glasgow. 1881 - 11 Green Wynd, Rutherglen. 1891 - 31 Burnhill Street, Rutherglen. 1901 - 34 Mill Street, Rutherglen. 1911 - 34 Mill Street, Rutherglen. Only Robert(43)and his father(68) living here.
In 1915 Robert senior was on the valuation roll at 34 Mill Street.
Robert’s mother disappears from the census between 1891 and 1901.
In the census there are descriptions of Robert infirmities -1881 - not strong enough for work.1891 - born paralysed in lower limbs. 1901 - feeble minded.
So, it looks like Robert was born into a large family in Glasgow with physical and mental issues. He lived with his parents and also other extended family over his life including an uncle(?) and nephews. He continued to live with his father until at least 1911 and then was probably admitted to Hartwood when his father died.
I have full details of the census for 1871-1901.
