What a joy to discover this place is so well looked after! My great-grandmother - Helen Booth, died at Hartwood in 1952, aged 74. She suffered from Alzheimer's in the end and that's why she was admitted. I often wondered what it was like for her.

Hello Loraine,
Thank you so much for your most prompt reply.
My Mother is delighted that the graveyard is the one she remembers from being a girl.
Although her sight now is very poor she was able to see the pictures of the graveyard on your website .
She thinks that the work your group has done is tremendous and it looks so well kept & even nicer than when she was a girl!
My Mother was born at 8 The Cottages (in 1931) ,which became 15 Canthill Gardens when more houses were built.
Her childhood was very happy in Hartwood.
She moved with her parents in 1950 to 57 Hartwood Road and stayed there until she was married.
After the death of her father in 1968, her mother had to vacate 57 Hartwood Road and moved to be near us here in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
Thank you for all the efforts of you and the rest of the group.
Kind regards
Margaret & Frank

Congratulations on your efforts.
I note the absence of someone I have been researching; Janet Scott Brown GREIG (1874-1916) who died in the hospital.
The find-a-grave website suggests that she was buried at Hartwood on 11 Dec 1916. HOWEVER the commentary there also suggests a child with her (bigamous, unlikely she knew this) husband which is manifestly incorrect, vide her 1911 census record et al, and thus this should not be trusted,
The death record has three people from Hartwood on the same page. Only one appears to have been buried at Hartwood. Thus dying at Hartwood does not mean being buried there.

I have been doing my family tree and have obtained a copy of my great grandmothers death certificate. She is Catherine Docherty ( née Hopkins) and she died in hardwood hospital on Nov 8th 1931. How do I find out if she was buried in Hartwood cemetery or if her family organized her burial elsewhere. Tia Frank

Had a walk round last Thursday as I was passing through the village. Beautiful, peaceful place and a testament to all the love and hard work that has gone in to it. I hope to get back up soon. Sx 💖

Last time I was at Hartwood hospital was my last shift in 1983. Took a walk up today and although it brought back a lot of good and bad memories it is in ruins but so peaceful. It was lovely to see the wee cemetery and what a job you guys have done. You should be really be so proud of yourselves. Its a lovely place for these souls to rest xxx
